Every writer needs a second pair of eyes. |

Why hire an editor? The first reason is simply what the headline suggests: Every writer does need a second pair of eyes. Professional writers know this. They are very good writers themselves, but they know their writing improves dramatically when a second person takes a look and suggests improvements. Because no matter how well we write, there comes a point when we are so used to looking at the paper or the computer monitor that we miss things that detract from our writing. What does an editor do? We check that your grammar is correct and that there are transitions between sections so that your writing is easy to follow. We ask if perhaps a pariticular word or a phrase says something you didn't mean. We suggest simple ways to make your sentences clearer and more enjoyable to read. And we look for consistency in terminology. Through it all, a good editor lets your writing style show through, because that is, after all, what makes your writing unique. Your unique way of writing is what engages your reader and makes them want to find out more. An editor also saves time. Good writing does take a lot of time. There is all that rewriting and polishing and agonizing over which word is right. But bringing an editor into the process can speed things up tremendously, freeing up time you'd rather use elsewhere. And an editor is affordable. Prices depend on the complexity of the material, how long it is (generally longer material is less per page than shorter material), how much rewriting is necessary, and how soon you need it done. But in every case you will be surprised at how affordable it is to get that "second pair of eyes."
