Things to consider when hiring an editor or a writer.
Hiring an editor can save time and
money (and a lot of aggravation!) -- if you keep certain needs in mind:
- Find someone
who understands the purpose of your writing and how to speak directly to your readers. A
good editor asks a lot of questions. That is because your project and
your readers are unique. Only then can an editor really help you
accomplish your purpose.
- Look for an editor
who works with you to fit your budget. One
way to save money is to make your rough draft as polished as you can before you give it to the editor.
- Hire
someone who can work within your timetable. An editor or a writer should
respect your deadlines in the same way you honor your own.
- Find an editor who doesn't have much ego. You
know your subject best. A good editor works behind the scenes and helps
you say
the things you want -- in the way you want. She or he knows that it is
your unique voice that lets your passion for your subject show through
and engages your readers.
